Susi Reviews Overruled by Emma Chase

overruled cover Emma Chase

As a DC defense attorney, Stanton Shaw keeps his head cool, his questions sharp, and his arguments irrefutable. They don’t call him the Jury Charmer for nothing – with his southern drawl, disarming smile and captivating green eyes – he’s a hard man to say no to. Men want to be him and women want to be thoroughly cross examined by him.

Stanton’s a man with a plan. And for a while, life was going according to that plan.

Until the day he receives an invitation to the wedding of his high school sweetheart and mother of his beloved ten-year old daughter. Jenny is getting married — to someone who isn’t him.

That’s definitely not part of the plan.

Sofia Santos is a city raised, no-nonsense litigator who plans to become the most revered criminal defense attorney in the country. She doesn’t have time for relationships or distractions.

But when Stanton, her “friend with mind-blowing benefits” begs for help, she finds herself out of her element, out of her depth, and obviously out of her mind. Because she agrees to go with him – to The-Middle-Of-Nowhere, Mississippi – to do all she can to help Stanton win back the woman he loves.

Her head tells her she’s crazy…and her heart says something else entirely.

What happens when you mix a one stop-light town, two professional arguers, a homecoming queen, four big brothers, some Jimmy Dean sausage and a gun-toting Nana?

The Bourbon flows, passions rise and even the best laid plans get overruled by the desires of the heart.

My Review

Emma Chase write stories that bring plenty of smiles, swooning, oohing and smiling again and again.  Overruled, her latest creation is filled with all of this and a story I loved and know you will too.

Let me tell you all about Stanton Shaw, the male lead in this story.  Oh my!  This protagonist is totally delicious.  Stanton is this sexy, powerful, swoon worthy lawyer living in D.C.  He’s a good old country boy too.  Yeah… cowboy hat included.  Just think sexy Marlboro man minus the cigarettes.  You’ll see.  I once thought that Drew Evans from her beloved Tangled series had won me over. But honestly, Drew and Stanton are running neck and neck on this race.  Fortunately, Drew makes an appearance in this book keeping his fans happy.  Thanks Emma for that.

Now back to Stanton.  He works with Sofia Santos, another powerful lawyer from his law firm.  They are “friends with benefits.”  Their relationship is sexy, funny and convenient.  I love her character.  She is a force to be reckoned with.  Equally talented, they share the same career goals and work well together both in and out of the courtroom.

In this story, Stanton’s past, Jenny comes into the picture taking him and Sofia along with it. Stanton and Sofia must visit Mississippi, his hometown and the home of his adorable daughter Presley, the rest of his friends and family who together make this book so much fun to read.  Trust me, the little town of Sunshine, Mississippi has never been funnier.

Stanton’s time back in Mississippi is both emotional and funny. You’ll find acres of farm land, a Sunday Church Service, a tractor race, a backyard bbq, and a small town where everyone knows your business.  Presley, his daughter, his family and even Jimmy Dean, not the sausage are awesome too adding to this lighthearted and “fantastic” read.

It’s during Stanton’s time back in his hometown that he learns a valuable lesson about love and home.  His visit reveals more to him than he ever expected.

This story is told in both Stanton and Sofia’s POV making it totally come to life in the mind of the reader.  I loved the tidbits that were perfectly sprinkled in indicating their feelings for each other.  The friendly banter between their common friends Jake and Brent added to this brilliant piece.

Now, without giving this fantastic story away, I’ll leave you wondering all about this sexy alpha male named Stanton and his gorgeous colleague Sofia. No spoilers from me.

There’s so much to love about this book and especially more to look forward to in the next book in this series.  I can’t wait to read it.  The Legal Briefs Series is sure to be another success for Emma.

I gave this book 5 brilliant stars.

A little bit about Veil of Scars:

Steven is tall, dark and damaged. He doesn’t let anyone close, comfortable on the outside of normal life where he can hide his scars behind a wall so high that nothing gets through…except them. Despite a childhood marred with black and blue, he’s survived and moved in with his two best friends, Sam and Charlie.

Life should get better, but it was Sam who held him when the dark threatened to swallow him whole, Sam who gave him a place that felt like home, and Sam who knew every scar and every broken place.

And it’s all been taken away with Charlie sharing Sam’s bed.

Without his former confront, Steven realizes what’s been hiding in the deep corners of his heart, and the truth sinks him like a weight. He’s in love with one or maybe both of his roommates. Navigating unrequited love tears Steven apart and brings him to the precipice, and he has to choose: his feelings or Sam’s…and Charlie’s?

 My Review

One of the reasons I enjoy reading is because well written stories have the power to transport you to another place and/or time.  Veil of Scars is one of those books that took me on a new and different journey as a reader.

Veil of Scars is the story of Steven, Sam and Charlie, three friends who share a common/special love for each other.  Throughout their lives, their friendship, their love and their unique bond evolves.  Written through Steven’s POV, Veil of Scars takes you on a personal journey of discovery.  I loved how JR used relevant flashbacks to the character’s early years to clearly bring a clear understanding to the character’s lives in the present.

I truly enjoyed reading and experiencing the emotions all of the characters endured throughout the story.  But, I enjoyed Steven’s the most.  I felt the strongest connection to Steven.  It’s this personal connection that captivated me.  Don’t get me wrong, I loved Charlie.  She is Steven’s emotional tether.  And I admire Sam, the hero, the light.

This story represents diversity and as a supporter, I applaud JR for his writing and content.  This book tells a different kind of love story. Nonetheless, it brings awareness to what love is and how it can be different for everyone.  There is no right way to love.

I gave Veil of Scars 5 stars.

JR, your book made me think of this quote:

Here is a sneak peek from Veil of Scars:

Soon the music was going and party-goers were milling about in the low lights. There were drinks and bodies on every surface. I stood behind the bar, not minding making drinks for the guests since there was little else at the party that I wanted to do. The atmosphere mellowed as the liquor took effect, and Sam had long stopped trying to drag me out to dance. Instead, he’d taken up a spot on the couch with Char. Their mouths met, skin and lips, while their hands wandered, stroking and skimming over each other’s clothes as the party moved around them. I sat back, finding I was no longer needed as everyone was sated. The few remaining people had paired off in couples for the night, strewn over the furniture and floor. The base thumped, and bodies moved with it as if the alcohol had turned them into living recreations of the music. The door to Char and Sam’s room slammed shut, closing off a guy and two adventurous women.

Sam’s head snapped back at the sound, and he cursed under his breath. He glanced around then whispered to Char. She giggled and grabbed a throw off the back of the couch.

An outsider where I sat, I seemed to have escaped notice as the only fairly sober party in the room.

She pulled the blanket over herself and then moved the thin fabric over his lap. Soon Sam’s head flopped back into the cushion, and his mouth fell open in a soundless moan. Charlie’s eyes blazed with mischief, and she grew more eager with every reaction from her boyfriend. His hand slid up her shoulder, curling around the back of her neck. My skin burned in the same place, a physical memory of the times he’d touched me the same way.

He dragged his head off the back of the sofa and looked at her, his blue gaze pleading louder than any words could. The air buzzed with electricity from the pair of them. He licked over his lips, and the muscles in his arm tightened as he guided her head towards his lap. Charlie ducked under the blanket, and a flash of heat ran through me.

Was she really going to go down on him in the middle of the party?

I held my breath, transfixed as Sam lifted up his ass below where the blanket covered him to slide his pants down around his ankles, I guessed. He groaned, this time audibly, and the sound went right to my gut. I chewed on my lip ring unable to stop myself from staring. Charlie’s head bobbed under the cover, and Sam’s eyes rolled back in his head.

Suddenly I was flushed and embarrassed. I was the voyeur, spying on my friends who were caught up in drunken passion. I tore my eyes away from his lap only to find his blue gaze locked on me.

About J.R. Gray

When not staying up all night writing, J.R Gray can be found basking in the warm glow of the Miami sun, or at the gym where it’s half assumed Gray is a permanent resident. A dominant, pilot, and sword fighting enthusiast, Gray finds it hard to be in the passenger seat of any car. Gray frequently interrupts real life, including normal sleep patterns, to jot down nonsense. The bane of Gray’s existence are commas, and even though it’s been fully acknowledged they are necessary, they continue to baffle and bewilder.

If Gray wasn’t writing…well, that’s not possible. The build up of untold stories would haunt Gray into an early grave or possibly a mental institution where the tales would end up on the walls in crayon and finger paint.

Susi Reviews Cain’s Way by Michelle Day @MichelleYDay

Cain’s Way

by Michelle Day

Release Date: February 26, 2015

cain's way cover

Born to be the Alpha, the circumstances of his birth were cause for concern to his pack. As he grew, his love for the human race and his preference for solitude only served to distance him from them further.
Cain didn’t care for the pack life. He travelled and kept himself away, pursuing the things he loved. Leaving his pack in the hands of those more capable than himself. Not concerned by the gossip and rumours surrounding him. Raised with the knowledge that he was special, he embraced his quirks and quietly set about proving his worth in his own unique and often humorous way.

My Review

Michelle Day writes paranormal?  Who knew.  I am always excited to read other books written by an author I admire.  Well, Michelle Day has done it again with her latest book.  While I admit that I am not a huge paranormal fan, Cain’s Way has made me change my mind about this genre.

Cain’s Way is not your typical paranormal book.  It is humorous story following the life of Cain, a sexy and witty shifter.  From the first few pages, Cain will intrigue you and make you laugh.  His character, as well as his demeanor is quite unique.  The story is well developed and keeps you engaged. Cain’s sarcasm and powerful alpha status make this a fun book to read.  The supporting characters are just as entertaining.  Lily, his mate is beautiful and totally captures his heart.  His best mate Loren, is also another great character.  His ability to connect with and protect Cain is what I most admire about him.  Finally, Cain’s way of keeping his pack and his in-laws in line is also original and admirable.

So yes, this paranormal gem is one that I recommend. 🙂 I look forward to reading more paranormal from Michelle in the future.

I gave this book 5 stars.

It was truly an enjoyable read. Be sure to add it to your TBR.  It releases this week!

I received an ARC from the author for an honest review.

Blog Tour – Review – Giveaway – The Science of Attraction by Verity Jacobs @veritymjacobs

the science of attraction blog tour banner

the science of attraction cover verity jacobs

Kate Ramsey is at the top of her game.

She’s the hot new recruit at the most prestigious research institute in Germany, and she’s determined to live up to the hype — even if it means working day and night. Stress relief comes in the form of a no-nonsense affair with her neighbor, who also happens to be the director of the institute. Who says sex should be anything more than a contract between two people who have other things on their mind?

So when Tom Baker saunters into her life, Kate is understandably upset to see this well-oiled machine splutter and seize. Tom is young and smart, and far too pretty for his own good. Kate can’t help but be drawn to him, even if giving in to the attraction would mean risking everything she’s worked for.

My Review

Here’s a fun and sexy read that I really enjoyed and know you will too.  This debut by Verity Jacobs was a treat.  I’m a sucker for romance and especially when the romance takes place in the workplace.  Workplace romances always deliver lots of sexy tension between the characters.  The Science of Attraction has that tension, humor, science talk, and romance.

The heroine, Kate is an intelligent and well regarded scientist.  I love her.  Reading about a brainy scientist was a refreshing change.  The “men” in her life, and yes I did say “men” are scientists too. Hmm.. there’s something sexy about a scientist, right?  Well, wait until you meet Tom.  This hot scientist from Texas will make you want to visit the biology lab more often.  Managing a career with a sexy colleague can be quite difficult, especially when their is a strong attraction.

The secondary characters, more scientists from around the world are entertaining and very real.  I also love Kate’s sister.  Their conversations are full of advice and are funny too.

I don’t want to give too much away because you need to read this book.   It is truly an enjoyable read.

I gave this book 4 fun and sexy stars.  Be sure to add it to your TBR.

I’m looking forward to reading more of Verity’s writing soon.

Susi Reviews Mai Tai’d Up by Alice Clayton @Alice_Clayton

Susi Reviews Mai Tai’d Up (Cocktail #4)

by Alice Clayton

mai tai'd up cover alice clayton

Looking for the perfect mix of smart, sexy, and sassy? Mai Tai’d Up continues New York Times bestselling author Alice Clayton’s Cocktail series, which began with Wallbanger and continued with Rusty Nailed and Screwdrivered.

The gossip mill in the seaside community of Monterey is churning about Chloe Patterson, the newcomer who is starting a sanctuary for rescued pit bulls. It’s rumored that she’s a former beauty queen (true) who ditched her fiancé the morning of their wedding (also true). And that while she’s not looking for a new man, the good-looking local veterinarian has his eye on her. Absolutely, positively true.

When Lucas Campbell isn’t at the family veterinary clinic, he’s paddle boarding in Monterey Bay. Recently single, he’s definitely not in the market for a new relationship, but he still can’t resist taking a second, third, and fourth look at the recent arrival of Miss Golden State.

Neither Lucas nor Chloe has any interest in being tied down. Being tied up, however—now there’s a thought. But are a few Mai Tais, a moonlit night, and the music of Frank Sinatra enough to allow them both to forget their past? Let’s hope Ol’ Blue Eyes knows what he’s doing.

Mix one part tiki, one part kinky, and a splash of old black magic matchmaking, and it’s time to be . . . Mai Tai’d Up.

My Review

Alice Clayton does it again in Mai Tai’d Up.  Her latest book is a perfect concoction of fun, sexy and sassy complete with a magnificent cast of characters, including some characters from Screwdrivered and an adorable canine.

This story is entirely told in Chloe’s point of view.  I must say, I love Chloe.  She had a brief mention in the last book.  She is the runaway bride looking to start her life in a new place away from her past.  This former beauty pageant queen heads off to Monterey where a new home, job and life await her.

Her former charity work leads her to her new job.  Although she never held an official job before, her calling, her love of animals shines through in her new endeavor, working with rescue dogs.  Well, if you work with dogs, you need a vet right?  Well, this new vet, he’s HOT!  Enter Lucas a sexy 6’3″ ginger with brilliant blue eyes, tanned skin and great hair.  He’s not only gorgeous but sweet, funny and yes, I repeat, SEXY.

Lucas, the vet and Chloe become friends and of course, written in true Alice Clayton style, their friendship evolves and there are many funny moments between them. Of course,  there are plenty of moments fueled with sexual tension making this a most enjoyable read.

Alice not only brings readers her unique and totally awesome, funny and sexy writing, but transports us to spectacular locations.  I love Monterey and pictured this story vividly.  The theme of pet rescue touched my heart because I am a true dog lover.  I love that she brought awareness to an issue so many people choose to ignore.

I read this book pretty quick and admit I had a huge grin on my face for most of it.  Alice’s books always make me smile, swoon and smile some more.

I would love to read more about Chloe and Lucas in another book.  As a reader, I want more of their story.  This book can be read as a standalone but why would you want to do that?  I recommend reading all of Alice’s books in this fabulous Cocktail series.

Alice, this book is another 5 star read. And, I too love gingers.  You see,  I married one. And, he’s a vet too. (the other kind of vet, a US Marine)

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Now, go get Mai Tai’d Up!

Some of my favorite lines….

“I want it all. I want encompassing knock your socks off, can’t live without you, can’t be in a room without wanting you naked, love.”

As I picked up my doodled To Do List, I noticed that on the bottom I’d written Lucas. On my To Do List.  “Yeah yeah yeah,” I muttered to myself. Still smiling.

“First, I can’t believe you just pinched a pregnant woman. Second, I can’t believe you are not hitting that! What on God’s earth is stopping you? Third, and this is the pregnancy hormones talking, if Clark says it’s okay, I’m going to hit that if you don’t!”  This was all said in a stage whisper while Lucas and Clark talked guy talk about monkeys or something. “And fourth, can I have some more ice cream?”

“By the way, what was that about bouncing on his dick? Whose dick are we talking about?”

“I don’t even think that’ll fit,” I said.   “Oh, it’ll fit,”  he murmured, then pulled away. “Wait-are we… talking about…..fitting?”

Corrado Moretti.

The world knows the notorious Kevlar Killer, but few have ever seen what lies beneath his armor. The abused child. The neglected teenager. The broken man. He always did whatever he had to do in order to survive.

It’s kill or be killed.

Throughout his life, he has been there in the shadows, a witness to everything from beginning to end. Bound by loyalty and honor, there’s only one thing he would sacrifice it all for: family.

Never get close. Never get attached. It’s a lesson that has been brutally pounded into him since childhood, but they’re words the DeMarcos make it difficult for him to follow. Through them he finds love and grieves loss, realizing the world isn’t quite as black and white as it’s made out to be.

This book is a prequel to Sempre. Sempre does not have to be read first, but this book contains spoilers from Sempre.

My Review

Some books just capture the reader and remain with them forever. The Forever Series:  Sempre, Sempre Redemption and now Made have done just that. They have a special place in my heart and my bookshelf.  This series is at the top of my favorites.

Made, the story of Corrado Moretti is an outstanding and exceptional read.  I was so excited when I first learned that J.M. Darhower had written it.  Needless to say, I devoured the ARC when I received it.  You see, Corrado was a character who I didn’t particularly like in Sempre but learned to love in Sempre Redemption.  He was dark and clearly misunderstood. Knowing why he acted the way he did changed my perception of him completely.

Yes, it is true that we grow up and it is our early years, the events we experience, the people around us and our parents who clearly shape who we turn into.  Made chronicles Corrado’s life from his early years with his family, Katrina his sister, his mother,  and especially the role his father played in the man he became.  Throughout the book, readers of Sempre and Sempre Redemption will understand events that were mentioned as J.M. Darhower cleverly depicts them as Corrado lived them.

One of my favorite parts of this book has to be when Corrado and Celia first meet.  True love knows no age.  This love that Corrado and Celia have is strong and is a love like no other. After reading Made, I totally understand this couple.  Their love is unique and they are clearly meant for each other.  Celia is his perfect soul mate.

Learning about the DeMarco family and how Corrado got involved with this Mafia family was enlightening.  Corrado is more that just a member of La Cosa Nostra. He proves to be loyal and so much more to this family and especially to his father in law.

Corrado has a nickname, The Kevlar Killer.  Readers will discover how he got this name.  Throughout this book, characters mentioned in Sempre and Sempre Redemption will come to life.  I especially loved reading about them.

Yes, Carmine and Dominic DeMarco are in this book too.  These two boys are special and having learned about their early years made them even more special to me. I can’t forget to mention Vincent DeMarco.  I had many questions about him and his early years.  Made clearly answers them as well.

I admit, I felt many emotions while reading this book because at times, parts of this story made me relive Sempre and Sempre Redemption.  Books that stir my emotions are the best.  J.M. Darhower has mastered this talent and that’s why I love her books so much.

Thank you J. M. Darhower for writing this book.  Made completed this amazing series.

Just like Corrado fell hard for Celia, I too fell hard for this book.  I totally enjoyed learning about this mysterious and intriguing man.  Corrado did what he did for his family and those he loved .  Corrado is a hero in my eyes.

Made can be read as a standalone but I highly recommend reading it after Sempre and Sempre Redemption because of the plot spoilers.

An ARC was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

I gave this book 5 amazing stars!!
