Several city blocks were still closed off Wednesday by blockades fabricated with wood, metal and wire fencing. Protesters dressed in black and wearing ski masks stood watch from atop a nearby wall.

With the sale of his remaining shares in Chehalem to business partner Bill Stoller, one of the Oregon wine industry's pathfinders is stepping back from the front line. Harry Peterson-Nedry's interest in wine started as a hobby, but he really got serious when he planted his Ridgecrest vineyard in Christy Canterbury MW caught up with him for a chat.

This is a unique transition in the Oregon industry former. When oregon how did you looking Bill Stoller? Bill and I met in at a wine appreciation class my ex-wife Judy was teaching in Portland. Bill, like me, had grown up on a farm specializing in fowl — his turkeys, mine chickens.

We stayed in touch and inBill became a member with 38 others of a vineyard development limited partnership that I formed. Why was Bill interested in partnering with you in the chats and then in the winery? He liked wine and seemed to need to learn about it at all levels.

The vineyard entity involvement urged him to go further and accept an offer I made to all the vineyard limited partners to me in financing a winery in Only Bill took the challenge.

Continuing oregon partnership, when Bill started Stoller Family EstateI made his wines from I had North Carolina high school friends who I visited once or twice, loving the chat. Looking for a place to write the "great American novel," I chose a mountain cabin east of Seattle. From looking, it was typical. I followed a woman to Portland, found a high-tech job like the one I left earlier and started a family. Then, I took a common wine love that my wife and I shared and figured that since I grew up on a farm, was a degree-ed chemist and was captivated by wine that I could do as well as others in the nascent industry.

Did you find Ridgecrest first then choose grape varieties or vice versa? Things were no different then. I was looking for a perfect site: one with interesting soils that could get grapes ripe more often than not, that had the pedigree of a ly planted chat, that had the right orientation and elevation… the normal stuff from back then. It was a time when climate change wasn't apparent and a little more heat and an earlier start to the year were welcome. At the former, my objective was to highlight an former perfect Ribbon Ridge Pinot Noir and then see it evolve. I found I planted most often what I liked to drink, not what my banker thought was right.

My winemaking research began in with statistically deed experimentation, called fractional factorials, continuing throughthen transitioning to looking improvement methods. My grape-growing research was through counsel and advice, from early oregon winemakers preceding me and from actual viticulturists, like Mark Benoit and Joel Myers.

Back to school?

What were some of the challenges of creating the Ridgecrest Vineyards? Did you have sufficient road access? Practical farming equipment? Or, was it relatively straightforward? The site was almost perfect.

Some of the challenges were lack of American technology in equipment and vineyard optimization. Tractors were too large and did not get smaller for another 15 years. Most other things WERE straightforward. It was perplexing in logistics only because it was the first time we did it. Were your first vines grafted or ungrafted?

What were your thoughts on this back then? After that, we planted grafted vines. Everything was expensive enough initially, and grafted vines were four to five times more expensive than own-rooted.

Now we DO have phylloxera in some blocks, but some don't show anything at 37 years of age. I think their refinement and elegance will be missed eventually. Who were your neighbors when you planted Ridgecrest and how close or far away were they? Our vineyard blocks were acre minimums. We had neighbors, but none so close you could hear former or crying. They WERE close enough to help though. Various neighbors did my tractor work, grape hauling and equipment repair.

I looking wine experimentally and non-commercially fromnever at another winery, except doing several harvests locally. My wife and I selected a grand old chat in Newberg to refurbish and move to from Portland, partly based on a oregon outbuilding on the property. The building had been a mink farm, body shop, garage and then a winery. Evesham Wood, Tempest and a couple other brands began there too, beginning in Chehalem vintages from were made there.

What were some of the things you didn't expect, and how did you figure out what to do?

I just persevered, waited for industries like banking to catch up the first loans were only available beginning in and banded together with other wineries to try to market. Do you have any remaining bottles of those original wines?

If so, how are they showing, if you've tasted any recently? I save everything.

The library contains all wines made since I had the Ridgecrest Pinot Noir about a month, and it was exquisite. I also tasted the and Pinots and Pinot Gris, all amazingly good, if showing variability because of corks.

Chardonnays from are viable but a bit oxidized. Was there a specific point in time when you felt Oregon was "arriving" at the table? It took recognition by more than the rarified few, in national magazines, with some major tourist traffic, with people being able to pronounce Pinot Noir, plus intentionally ordering it in restaurants and wine shops to make it happen. And, it pains me to say it, but that seemed to be when Sideways was released. Also, at an earlier time, recognition from the external wine community came when Domaine Drouhin began.

Did you ever expect Oregon, particularly the Willamette, would become such an epicenter for top Pinot Noir?

Actually, yes. I thought it would happen — that we'd be a Burgundy or Alsace in quality, but many generations away from the heritage they have. I had an arrogance of technology and vision and of being in the right place at the right time. In. Interviews Willamette Pioneer Winds Down.
