TEASER

Chelsea sits beside me on the couch, facing me, her legs tucked, her pretty feet curled under her. Yes—Chelsea has pretty feet, okay? I never knew feet could be pretty—until I saw hers.
“So . . . that talk I mentioned before? We should probably have that now, while we can.”
I take a sip of my drink and nod. “Yeah—I wasn’t at all hoping you’d forget about it or anything.”
Her face slides into a grin. “Funny.”
I look back at her, straight-faced. “I’m a funny guy.”
When she doesn’t say anything for a few moments, I ask, “What’s up?”
Because now I’m actually getting concerned. My stomach tightens as I brace for whatever’s worrying her—and before I even know what I’m up against, in my head I’m already planning all the ways I’ll take care of it. Because that’s what I do—and I’m good at it.
But what she tells me next blows my fucking mind.
“I’m late.”
Two words—ten thousand thoughts exploding in my head at once.
I’m a big guy, six-five, 225 pounds of muscle. Guys like me, our voices don’t squeak. But at this moment, mine comes damn close.
“Like . . . for an appointment?”
Chelsea inhales deeply, then breathes out, “No.”

2015 was a difficult year for me personally.  Both of my parents suffered from health issues. Fortunately, they are healthy and doing remarkably well now.  I thank those of you who know me personally for your support and kind words during those rough times this past year.  Books also helped me and I have those amazing authors to thank for that.  Books are my escape and I did plenty of reading in plenty of different locations as well.  Thanks to all of my followers who support this hobby of mine.

May “2016”  bring you all happiness, love, friendship, peace and health.

Sustained (The Legal Briefs #2) by Emma Chasesustained cover

A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.

When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.

Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.

Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I’m going to Mommy & Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal’s office.

Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.

And that — that, I know how to do.

My Review

“A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.”

Whenever I hear that Emma Chase is releasing a new book I get very excited.  You see, she is “the author” who expertly writes male POV. Of course, her latest series, The Legal Briefs does not disappoint.  The second book in this series, Sustained was absolutely brilliant.  Emma called it special and I can see why.  I could tell that she took her time developing this complex yet lovable lawyer named Jake Becker that I adore so much.

We first met Jake in the last book, Overruled, and he came across as a total player.  In this book, Jake gets to tell his story and what a heartwarming and sexy story it is.  This playboy has his life together.  He has a wonderful job, his own place, wonderful friends, dates any woman he wants, and has a healthy sex life.

In this story, Jake meets Chelsea and he is very much intrigued by this beautiful woman.  But, this woman comes with six kids.  Their story is a sad one, but one that brings these two together. The kids, of varying ages make for some of the funniest and heartwarming moments in the book.  For me, I loved watching Jake peel off those playboy layers little by little.  The support of the other characters which are absolutely lovable too help make this story into such a special one. Those characters: Stanton, Sofia, Brent and Presley wind up helping Jake in more ways than one.

Jake, the player starts to change and this is what I loved most about him.  Just when you think you have your life figured out, someone suddenly appears and makes you rethink your priorities.

I also loved learning about Jake’s past which made him into the man he is today, especially reading about the man who helped whip him into shape. That part of the story will touch your emotions.  Be warned, you will love discovering the many sides of Jake.

Honestly, this book has it all.  I can assure you that you will feel all kinds of emotions when reading it.  This story is well crafted, like a delicious recipe with the right amount of humor, love, lust, steamy sex, angst, empathy and happiness.

Sustained is definitely another hit for one of my favorite authors.  This story was so good that I reread it after my first reading.  You see, I really couldn’t get enough of Jake. Be prepared to laugh and read some incredibly sexy scenes too.

This powerful attorney proved to be a family man down deep inside and watching him discover this about himself was truly fantastic.

I look forward to reading the next book in the series, Appealed, which will be Brent’s story.

I highly recommend Sustained to all my reader friends.  Male POV can’t get better than this.

I gave this book 5 stars.

What’s In The Author’s Bag? Emma Chase Reveals…. @EmmaChse

what's in the author's bag banner for blog

Have you ever wondered what your favorite authors carry around in their bags?

Well, this segment on my blog will answer that question.

emma chase image

Emma Chase revealed the contents of her purse for all to see and explained why she carries them.

emma chase purse 1

Full disclosure: I might be cheating a little bit, because I just came back from vacation so bag is still “TSA approved for airplane security” much neater than it usual!

So, what’s in my bag?

My iphone – don’t leave home without it (I never do)! My phone has my kindle app with loads of books, Twitter and FB apps, and of course email – I feel totally cut off from civilization if I don’t have my phone.

Sticky notes & pens – to jot down book ideas and dialogue as soon as they pop into my head (because if I don’t, I’m sure to forget them).

Extra contact lenses – because I’m blind as a bat.

Lip Gloss & Raspberry Rose Kiss Lip Butter – the only makeup I wear every day.

Gum – I’m an old school gum chewer. Juicy Fruit & Big Red are my favorites.

Sun Glasses – great for sunny days and even greater to rest on top of my head and push my hair back (hair in my face drives me crazy).

Hand Sanitizer – because I have kids and they still touch everything.

Receipts – usually from Starbucks (coffee needs to be a business expense).

Wallet – filled with more receipts, photographs and if I’m lucky, a few dollars.

French Lavender & Honey Body Spray – because smelling good makes me happy.

Thank you Emma for participating in this blog segment. I love your purse.  You have great taste too.  🙂

As a DC defense attorney, Stanton Shaw keeps his head cool, his questions sharp, and his arguments irrefutable. They don’t call him the Jury Charmer for nothing – with his southern drawl, disarming smile and captivating green eyes – he’s a hard man to say no to. Men want to be him and women want to be thoroughly cross examined by him.

Stanton’s a man with a plan. And for a while, life was going according to that plan.

Until the day he receives an invitation to the wedding of his high school sweetheart and mother of his beloved ten-year old daughter. Jenny is getting married — to someone who isn’t him.

That’s definitely not part of the plan.

Sofia Santos is a city raised, no-nonsense litigator who plans to become the most revered criminal defense attorney in the country. She doesn’t have time for relationships or distractions.

But when Stanton, her “friend with mind-blowing benefits” begs for help, she finds herself out of her element, out of her depth, and obviously out of her mind. Because she agrees to go with him – to The-Middle-Of-Nowhere, Mississippi – to do all she can to help Stanton win back the woman he loves.

Her head tells her she’s crazy…and her heart says something else entirely.

My Review

Emma Chase write stories that bring plenty of smiles, swooning, oohing and smiling again and again.  Overruled, her latest creation is filled with all of this and a story I loved and know you will too.

Let me tell you all about Stanton Shaw, the male lead in this story.  Oh my!  This protagonist is totally delicious.  Stanton is this sexy, powerful, swoon worthy lawyer living in D.C.  He’s a good old country boy too.  Yeah… cowboy hat included.  Just think sexy Marlboro man minus the cigarettes.  You’ll see.  I once thought that Drew Evans from her beloved Tangled series had won me over. But honestly, Drew and Stanton are running neck and neck on this race.  Fortunately, Drew makes an appearance in this book keeping his fans happy.  Thanks Emma for that.

Now back to Stanton.  He works with Sofia Santos, another powerful lawyer from his law firm.  They are “friends with benefits.”  Their relationship is sexy, funny and convenient.  I love her character.  She is a force to be reckoned with.  Equally talented, they share the same career goals and work well together both in and out of the courtroom.

In this story, Stanton’s past, Jenny comes into the picture taking him and Sofia along with it. Stanton and Sofia must visit Mississippi, his hometown and the home of his adorable daughter Presley, the rest of his friends and family who together make this book so much fun to read.  Trust me, the little town of Sunshine, Mississippi has never been funnier.

Stanton’s time back in Mississippi is both emotional and funny. You’ll find acres of farm land, a Sunday Church Service, a tractor race, a backyard bbq, and a small town where everyone knows your business.  Presley, his daughter, his family and even Jimmy Dean, not the sausage are awesome too adding to this lighthearted and “fantastic” read.

It’s during Stanton’s time back in his hometown that he learns a valuable lesson about love and home.  His visit reveals more to him than he ever expected.

This story is told in both Stanton and Sofia’s POV making it totally come to life in the mind of the reader.  I loved the tidbits that were perfectly sprinkled in indicating their feelings for each other.  The friendly banter between their common friends Jake and Brent added to this brilliant piece.

Now, without giving this fantastic story away, I’ll leave you wondering all about this sexy alpha male named Stanton and his gorgeous colleague Sofia. No spoilers from me.

There’s so much to love about this book and especially more to look forward to in the next book in this series.  I can’t wait to read it.  The Legal Briefs Series is sure to be another success for Emma.

I gave this book 5 brilliant stars.

Excerpt

“It’s A Wonderful Tangle Christmas Carol” by Emma Chase in Baby, It’s Cold Outside

I shut the door to our apartment and toss the mail down on the front hall table—mostly last-minute Christmas cards. Nothing says “you were an afterthought” like getting a Christmas card on Christmas Eve. I hang up my

black wool coat and slide the shopping bag with Kate’s new shoes under the table, to be wrapped later.

Unlike me, Kate is good about waiting. She likes to be surprised, so I don’t have to put in the extra effort of

hiding her gifts to keep her from sneaking a peek.

I walk into the living room—and stop dead in my tracks. I was planning on going home only for a few minutes, to let Kate know I’d be at the office the rest of the evening. But those plans get tossed out the window.

Because reclining in the chaise longue is a gift that beats the hell out of anything I’ve ever seen sitting under

a tree.

My wife, Kate Brooks-Evans.

Kate Brooks-Evans in lingerie.

Kate Brooks-Evans in see-through, Christmas-themed lingerie.

Her smooth legs are crossed at the ankle, bare except for the spiky heeled, shiny black boots that end below her knees. A sheer red nightie, trimmed in fluffy white fur, covers tiny red panties—held together by two silk bows tied at her hips. A shiny black belt cinches her flat stomach, and more white fur embellishes the strapless

neckline, bringing my attention to her perfect breasts and pink nipples pressing against the gauzy fabric. Kate’s

luscious dark hair falls over her shoulders, curled at the ends, and a fleecy red-and-white Santa hat sits on top of her head.

She smiles mischievously. “Welcome home, Santa.”

“Mrs. Claus,” I smirk, “you’ve changed.”
